For two friends from film school, a trip to Provence had a creative twist: They were off to perfume school to see if they could bottle the perfect fragrance.

Follow your nose

• The Grasse Institute of Perfumery offers one- and two-week beginner classes in the spring (when the roses are in bloom) and in the summer and fall (jasmine season). prodarom.fr, one-week course $1,584.

• Headquartered in Paris, Cinquième Sens has trained the pros at Azzaro, Chanel, and Yves Saint Laurent. But you don't have to fly to France to study with these experts: The company also has beginner classes in New York City. cinquiemesens.com, three-hour course $380.

• Serious scent-makers can enroll in a two-year Foundation of Natural Perfumery program with Vancouver-based Ayala Moriel Parfums. For those who can't spare that kind of time, the company also has morning and afternoon workshops for beginners, which include creating scented body butters and scrubs. ayalamoriel.com, from $25.
