One Presidents' Day weekend, my friend Rebecca and I planned on spending a few days in Vermont and staying at a friend's new B&B. We were going to do a little eating, a little shopping, a little spa-going—and a lot of relaxing by the fireplace in our pj's.
But things didn't go exactly as planned. We didn't bank on the mini blizzard that bounced our plane from JFK to Burlington, forcing the flight attendants to pass out garbage bags to queasy passengers. The storm also shuttered most of the places we wanted to check out, including a new restaurant owned by escaped Manhattanites. And I learned just how directionally challenged Rebecca is when we spent an hour driving the wrong way because she swore that, to reach the "cute New England sweater shop," we needed to bear right at the fork in the road. Despite all of this, the trip was one of the best I've ever taken (apologies to my husband).
Because when it comes to vacations with the girls, what you do doesn't really matter. Should your best-laid plans go awry—say, stalking a Hollywood star in Italy (check out Ann Hood's ode to George Clooney) or hitting the road for a long weekend (see a perfect escape in every state)—you're still in for a good time. And that's why we're expanding Girlfriend Getaways to include things you can do in your hometown, and even in your home.
As for Rebecca and me, our next adventure is a cruise. The trip started out as a 70th-birthday present for my grandmother, but before long, we were talking about inviting Rebecca and her mom. The truth is, a GG is all about spending the kind of quality time that many of us have such a short supply of with the people we love—including those other best friends, the ones who raised us.
